Chris Thorne appointed Project Manager at Carman Contracting
Chris Thorne has joined Carman Contracting as Project Manager, strengthening the company’s project management team with his extensive electrical and facilities management experience.
Chris began his career in 1997 as an Apprentice Electrician with a local electrical contractor in Weymouth, where he gained hands-on experience across domestic and commercial electrical installations. Following his apprenticeship, he joined another electrical firm where he expanded his expertise before moving into facilities management. He worked for City Facilities Management and Millers Vanguard on major retail contracts at ASDA, Sainsbury’s and M&S, managing electrical repairs, maintenance schedules and project coordination.
With his extensive practical and managerial experience, Chris made the strategic decision to move into project management, initially with Meridian Cooling before joining us at Carman Contracting. “My previous role was in the air conditioning industry, but as an electrician, it made sense to return to the electrical sector,” explained Chris. “Carman has worked with Meridian in the past, so I already had a connection with the team, and joining felt like a great opportunity.”
Chris joined Carman Contracting in January 2025 and has been involved in several key projects, including the new installation of a public address and voice alarm system (PAVA) at Newport Tribunal Court, the conversion of seven flats into five new flats at Parsonage Barn and new CCTV and lighting at Sutton Business Park.
As Project Manager, Chris oversees electrical projects from start to finish, ensuring they’re completed safely, on time, and within budget. His responsibilities include planning and scheduling, budget management, quality control, safety and documentation. “My day typically starts with checking emails, and then depending on the project, I’ll review parts or plant needed, attend site meetings and chase relevant safety certifications,” he said. “I also need to ensure we have the right people in place for our upcoming projects.”
Chris enjoys the wide variety of interesting projects that keep his work engaging and challenging; and appreciates the supportive environment at Carman. “The team here is incredibly friendly and always willing to help, which makes every day enjoyable and fulfilling. I am excited about the opportunity to grow with the company."
“Chris brings hands-on technical expertise and leadership to our team,” added Rory Carman, Director at Carman Contracting. “His experience in electrical systems, maintenance and project management makes him a valuable addition to the business.”
