Solar PV Panels

  • Solar panels are made out of photovoltaic cells that convert the sun’s energy into electricity. These cells are sandwiched between layers of semi-conducting materials such as silicon. Each layer has different electronic properties that energise when hit by photons from sunlight, creating an electric field. This is known as the photoelectric effect – and it’s this that creates the current needed to produce electricity.

Panels generate direct current (DC) electricity, so an inverter is needed to convert the DC electricity to alternating current (AC) which is used by domestic appliances. You can use the electricity you generate in your home, or export it to the grid.

The amount of electricity produced annually is determined by the orientation of the panels, if there is any shading, how sunny the location is and the size of the system. As output is so variable, we will design your system carefully to make the most use of the energy you generate.
