Carman Contracting secures key role in Bournemouth Lifeboat Corps project
Carman Contracting is playing a crucial role in bringing a state-of-the-art training and educational facility to life for Bournemouth Lifeboat Corps. The project, which will enhance beach safety along Bournemouth’s seafront, showcases our expertise in delivering comprehensive electrical and safety solutions.
Carman Contracting is working alongside the main contractor, Seascape, and in collaboration with Meridian Cooling Ltd for Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council on the new facility. Our work began in June 2024 and is due to finish by the end of the year. It encompasses a wide range of vital services, including comprehensive electrical installation, fire alarm systems, CCTV, door access, intruder alarms, solar PV and a public address system.
Work started on the new facility in November 2023 by demolishing an existing derelict structure. The new purpose-built centre will serve as the new headquarters for the Bournemouth Lifeboat Corps, a voluntary club, and benefit other community groups. Due to open its doors in March 2025, the centre is situated on the Joseph Steps site beneath the West Cliff Zig Zag and will feature dedicated training and operational rooms, equipment storage and changing facilities.
A key focus of our installation is energy efficiency and sustainability. The lighting design, for example, will feature a mix of reactive push switches and presence/absence detection, ensuring lights are activated only when needed and minimising unnecessary energy use. Additionally, a photovoltaic system, comprising 37 solar panels on the roof will generate clean energy, with surplus power being redirected back into the premises.
Security is another paramount concern. Carman Contracting is installing a sophisticated access control system using Near Field Communication (NFC) mobile credentials and key fobs. All external doors will meet “Secure by Design” standards, incorporating at least two multiple locking mechanisms for enhanced protection. A wired access control system, with contacts on all access points, PIR detection on external windows, and a user-friendly mobile app for remote monitoring and control will provide round-the-clock security.
We are also installing advanced safety features. These include a fully automated zonal fire detection and alarm system with mobile app connectivity, alert alarms in toilets and changing rooms, and a disabled refuge system. A comprehensive CCTV setup, including a motorised varifocal camera for seaward viewing, will enhance safety and monitoring capabilities. The installation of a PA system will allow public service announcements, complete with microphones to the external horn loudspeakers.
“From the energy-efficient lighting to the integrated alarm systems, every aspect of our work is designed to support the Lifeboat Corps in its vital mission,” said Rory Carman, Carman Contracting’s Director. “We’re proud to be contributing to what is hoped will become an internationally recognised centre for open water and life-saving activities.
